
Julie Strom
Percussionist Dr. Julie Strom is a two-time-recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship and has performed throughout North America, Asia, and Europe. Julie earned her Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music studying under New York Philharmonic principal percussionist, Christopher Lamb, and her Master of Music degree from the Hochschule für Musik (Munich, Germany), studying under Peter Sadlo. Her Doctor of Arts degree is from the University of Northern Colorado.
With a fascination for experimental music and theater collaborations, Julie originated the role of the “Percushroomist” in the show, Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy in 2008 on Broadway in New York City. She has also written, produced and performed a one-woman theatrical percussion show entitled, Alice On Time. Julie teamed up with award-winning composer and drummer Allison Miller to form “junKtion”, a drum and percussion duo that combines all original music with an experimental flair. They have toured internationally to perform and lecture at universities, schools, and festivals.
As an orchestral and chamber musician, Julie has toured and played with the Munich Symphony Orchestra, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, Boulder Philharmonic, Fort Collins Symphony, Steamboat Springs Orchestra, Greeley Philharmonic, as well as Ontario orchestras including the Toronto Chamber Orchestra, and the Guelph and Kitchener-Waterloo Symphonies. She performs regularly with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. In May of 2015, Strom premiered a percussion concerto by German composer Marco Hertenstein in Ontario, Canada.
Other highlights include performing Bartok’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion with pianists Martha Argerich and Nelson Goerner (Lübeck, Germany), Darius Milhaud's Concerto pour Percussion et Petit Orchestre with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Julie has also performed under noted conductors Christoph Eschenbach, Kurt Masur, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, among others.
Julie’s doctoral dissertation entitled Theater Percussion: Developing a Twenty-First-Century Genre Through the Combination of Visual, Dramatic, and Percussive Arts is published and can be found on Amazon.com. Based in Denver, Julie teaches at Regis University, is lead Teaching Artist with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra Very Young Composers program, and is the Orchestra Manager for the Denver Young Artists Orchestra.
